                  Gyro and Accelerometer Panel (GAP)

Primary focus is to develop standards, standard terminology, specification formats, and test procedures for, and to promote understanding of components and systems for detection or measurement of linear or angular motion. A Standard for the Specification of Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) is currently under development. Strategic test procedures for emerging new sensor technologies.

The purpose of the Panel is to create standard terminology, specification formats, and test procedures for, and to promulgate understanding of components and systems for detection or measurement of linear or angular motion.

The Panel is composed of representatives of industry, government laboratories, educational institutions and professional societies who are knowledgeable of the characteristics, operating principles, sources of error, and areas of application of these components.

                  Standing Committees:

The Gyro and Accelerometer Panel meets for two days every two months and is comprised of two committees, one working on sensor-related documents and the other working on systems-related documents. For information on the venue for the next meeting, please visit the panel web page on the IEEE server, http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/gap/

                  Objectives:

The panel and its committees established the following objectives at the meeting that was held on 20/21 January 2020:

                  Panel Objectives

                  1. Ballot 952, “IEEE Standard for Specifying and Testing Single-Axis Interferometric Fiber Optic Gyros,” revision and submit for publication by July.

                  2. Ballot and publish 1559, “Standard for Inertial Systems Terminology,” revision by September.

                  3. Submit a PAR for 1431, “Standard for Specifying and Testing Coriolis Vibratory Gyros,” revision and complete draft by the end of the year.

                  4. Submit a PAR for 836, “IEEE Recommended Practice for Precision Centrifuge Testing of Linear Accelerometers,” by the end of the year.

                  5. Send P1780, “Standard for the Specification of Inertial Measurement Units (IMU),” out to ballot when received from the systems committee.
